Ysgol Deganwy

The school is built on the lower slopes of a historically famous hill called the Vardre. Here members of the butterfly club are visiting the Vardre during lunchtime. Some of the classrooms overlook Snowdonia and the Conwy estuary.

Some of the large school grounds have been extensively landscaped in recent years and they include a nature reserve and allotments in which the children grow vegetables and flowers.

The school has a well-stocked library. Encouraging reading is given high priority. Older children are trained to help younger ones, using the many easy chairs dotted around the school.

The school has a dedicated music room and children are encouraged to learn a musical instrument. Five peripatetic music teachers visit the school and give woodwind, brass, violin, guitar, bass guitar, harp and percussion lessons. The school orchestra plays at concerts.

The school is well-equipped for teaching I.T. Its resources include a suite of 32 Dell laptops so that it is possible for every child in a class to work individually at a computer.

Conwy operates a bi-lingual policy in all its schools. Ysgol Deganwy aims to develop the children's speaking and writing skills in both English and Welsh.  Top: Examples of the work of children who have been studying the Mabinogion in Welsh. Below: Each year the school holds an eisteddfod in which all the children compete in Welsh poetry, music and dancing and many dress in costume.

Children go on educational visits and trips. These are usually related to curricular work in the classroom.

The school attaches great importance to fostering a happy, friendly environment. For example at playtimes there is a rota of playground pals (in green caps) on duty. They are trained to help younger children. If a little one becomes upset for any reason, a playground pal may comfort him or her and if necessary seek help from one of several adults on duty.

Football, netball, swimming and athletics are taught and the school has a fine record in sports' competitions. There is also a climbing wall.

The Friends of Ysgol Deganwy organise various fund-raising events during the school year and have played an important part in helping fund the development of many of the school's resources.

Ysgol Deganwy tries to ensure that the education it provides enhances the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of each pupil through a varied, expansive and balanced curriculum in a pleasant and happy environment.

Its achievements have been praised in several inspectors' reports over the years.

More information about the school is included in the school Handbook which can be obtained from the school on request.

The head teacher is always willing to make an appointment to meet prospective parents and show them round the school.
