Learning Welsh

Ysgol Deganwy is in Wales and therefore the local language is Welsh. Most children at our school don't speak Welsh as their mother tongue but they learn it at school and some of the teaching is in Welsh.

Year 6 have been studying the Welsh legend of Branwen. Branwen was a Welsh princess who married an Irish prince called Matholwch. Her brother Efnisien didn't approve of their marriage. Efnisien was full of rage. Out of anger, he maimed all of Matholwch's horses.

The children in year 6 have enjoyed learning Welsh. Mrs Thomas has been teaching the children Welsh and makes it very enjoyable.  They all look forward to her lessons. They also have been learning about the book Sglod a Blod which is a story about two friends who have a lot of adventures in Abertwt with Neli. Sglod is Neli's fat dog, who loves chips, and Blod is Sglod's best friend, a seagull.

Several children who will be leaving Ysgol Deganwy at the end of this year will be going to Ysgol Y Creuddyn, a Welsh language school, most of the lessons are taught through the medium of Welsh.`
