Life at sea as a Viking

Drawn by Catherine Bennett

I woke up with a sore knee  because my sleeping bag mate, Linger Longbeard, had been pushing me into my rowing bench, so I got up to have my breakfast....fish!

Straight after breakfast Linger and I got to our oar to start rowing. It was a slightly windy day so the oar master made us row a little faster.

After half a mile of rowing the chief decided it was OK to throw the anchor in and play some games.

We were ordered to put our oars out as far as we

could for a game of running the oars. We had a lot of fun and only two of us fell in, Bigtown Blackbeard and Hairy Horseman!

We all stopped for dinner after we had cleared the deck of sea water

because the people who had fallen in the sea had spread water all over the deck.

We had cold, dry fish that we had caught the day before and a barrel of beer between eighty of us!

After lunch we all got back to the oars and our chief sent out a raven to try and discover if we were close to land! But we were wrong, the raven soon came back and we were made to row faster because it was getting darker and it

looked like a storm was coming! We were right and a storm did break with rain, thunder and lightning. It was terrible and we all got soaked so we had to have one man on each oar and one bucketing water out of the boat, I was chosen to bail the water and Linger Longbeard was left on his own to keep control of the oar!

It took a long time but eventually the storm ended and the chief lowered the anchor.

At last the deck was reasonably clean and we were all allowed to have our tea - a barrel of water and cold, dead fish. We all ate well and afterwards we were sent to do a little more rowing.

It was tiring but soon all over and the chief released another raven and this time it didn’t come back! It had been a tiring day but worth it, I thought!

We lowered the sails over the decks and I tucked myself into the animal skin sleeping bags with my rowing mate and fell fast asleep, straight away!
